Leading architecture and interior design firm is seeking an Associate Director – Design with conceptual expertise and proven leadership success to join their San Francisco office, guiding our project teams to win and execute some of the most notable workplace transformation projects in the business.

Job Overview

As an Associate Director – Design, you will take on a Design Lead role. It is your job to lead our cross disciplinary Project Teams through concept design and storytelling to define new experiences and opportunities for clients that win work. You will continue to work closely with clients and team members to provide the direction necessary to execute projects once they are won!
In addition to being at the top of your respective profession, as an Associate Director you are invested in the success of the firm. You are active in enhancing our business both externally (client – facing) and internally (talent and office) and do it all with a shared vision.

Key Responsibilities

• Leading project teams and other consultants to uncover integrated, innovative, and interdisciplinary solutions to design problems
• Delivering and winning design presentation opportunities for new medium sized projects on a regular basis
• Consulting with clients to establish design concepts and parameters, including how space will function, budget considerations, and aesthetic preferences
• Generating conceptual designs using a variety of graphic techniques, and work with Project Manager to prepare preliminary cost estimates
• Preparing and guiding the work of Design Team on written specifications, working drawings, and construction documents, including verification that designs meet applicable building codes where necessary
• Establishing and maintaining trust between the project team, client and other project stakeholders
• Monitoring and maintaining a high level of design quality within the project team.
• Problem-solving project design issues and applying inventive solutions.

Successful Candidate

In this role, we are looking for an accomplished Designer who can take the lead on projects, from the very first client interviews, through to project close out, including contributing to working drawings. In order to be successful in this, you must have extensive experience with the entire project lifecycle, including an exceptional knack and portfolio for delivering awe-inspiring ideas for corporate workplace clients. You should also be a natural-born storyteller that can captive clients, earn trust and inspire those working with you. You will have contributed to winning medium to large-scale workplace projects on a consistent basis, have demonstrated your ability to run multiple projects at once and have been active in mentoring and coaching other designers.

Qualifications & Key Competencies

• 12+ years of experience in workplace interior design or architecture
• Extensive workplace specific design experience is an essential requirement in this role
• BCIN License Preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Design or other related field
• Proficiency in SketchUp, AutoCAD, MS Office Applications, and InDesign (preferred)
• A portfolio of signature conceptual design work, including several workplace transformation
• Must have experience and confidence in delivering design pitches to corporate clients
• Ability to maintain design integrity from design concept to on-site construction
• Effectively contribute to multiple projects at the same time
• Knowledge of local codes and permitting
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Exemplary people skills with the ability to communicate and work effectively
• Interest and experience in mentoring younger designers and promoting a positive attitude
